The Weekend Preview: Crossing the Red River

Jan 27, 2022

The Oklahoma City Ice Hawks will cross the Red River south into the Children’s Health StarCenter in Euless to take on the Jr. Stars in their final home series of the 2021-2022 campaign.

The last time Oklahoma City took the ice was against the Louisiana Drillers at home in the Arctic Edge Ice Arena. The Ice Hawks come into the weekend 4th in the South Division, with a 15-10-1-0 record for 31 points, 6 points ahead of the Drillers for the final playoff spot.

OKC’s top three scorers in Robby Rabroker, Noah Henslee, and Jakob Holly combined for 17 total points against the Drillers. Rabroker and Henslee scored duel hat tricks in the 8-5 win Friday night.

The Jr. Stars have been playing a better game since the Christmas break but have not had the results to reflect that change in play. They are 1-5 since with a 9-23-0-0 record with 14 games remaining on the schedule. They have 18 points and are 7th in the South Division.

Hayden Russell will play in his 100th career NA3HL game on Friday. The veteran, stay-at-home, defenseman has played his entire NA3HL career in a Mid-Cities Jr. Stars uniform, collecting 3 goals and 13 assists for 16 points.

It is the first meeting between these two teams this season, but Oklahoma City blanked the Jr. Stars in the season series last year, winning all six games. The Ice Hawks were one game away from the Fraser Cup Championship game, beaten by the North Iowa Bulls. The latter did become the 2020-2021 Fraser Cup Champions and are now the Mason City Toros.

Puck drops at the Children’s Health StarCenter at 7 p.m. Friday, with 5:30 starts on Saturday and Sunday.
